German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier was transported to a Berlin hospital by ambulance on Monday evening after attending a dinner of the Parliamentary Committee on Economic Affairs.

On Tuesday morning, Altmaier took to Twitter to sound the green light after reports he struggled to find his words at the event in the capital.

“Thank you for the many wishes, which really moved me,” Altmaier wrote. “I’m doing great again. After a busy day at work, my admission to the hospital was a precautionary measure. The tests carried out so far, however, have not confirmed the concerns of my colleagues. Thank you !

Colleagues also welcomed the news, Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer saying: “Whatever the day may bring, this is certainly the best news today.”

Close ally of Merkel, still in the race this year

Altmaier, a member of the center-right Christian Democracy (CDU), was appointed Minister of Economy and Energy in Angela Merkel’s government in March 2018.

He is considered a close confidant of Merkel, having previously served as head of chancellery and environment minister in previous governments.

The incident comes just three weeks before the Germans go to the polls to elect a new parliament that will determine the country’s next chancellor after Merkel’s decision not to run for another term. With the end of the summer vacation, the schedules of the main politicians are currently exceptionally busy due to the campaign. Altmaier is seeking another term in the Bundestag Parliament, and potentially the government, depending on the outcome.

Altmaier paid tribute to Jan Hecker

Altmaier had offered his condolences on Monday to the family of Jan Hecker, the German ambassador to China who died suddenly on Tuesday.

“Jan Hecker’s death is a tragedy and a great loss for all who knew him,” Altmaier wrote on Twitter. “I have been able to work with him since 2005. His sense of duty, his human and professional skills and his in-depth training were exceptional. Our hearts go out to his family.
