BERLIN, May 18. / TASS /. The EU is expected to approve Russia’s Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine, Peter Altmaier, head of Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy, said on Tuesday.
He made this statement in the video address to participants of the German-Russian Potsdam Meetings.
âWe are in constant exchange with Russia on vaccine production. Germany with BioNTech and Russia with Sputnik V are among the pioneers of vaccines against the coronavirus. So, we have another point for close cooperation for the benefit of people. Of course, Sputnik V must receive approval in the European Union, like all the others [effective] medicines, drugs and vaccines, âhe said.
Germany has repeatedly expressed its willingness to use vaccines developed outside the EU, in particular Russia’s Sputnik V. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Minister of Health Jens Spahn have named the certification of the vaccine by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) as the key condition for this.
Russia was the first in the world to register a coronavirus vaccine in August 2020. The vaccine, developed by the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology of the Russian Ministry of Health, was given the name Sputnik V. It is a vector vaccine based on human adenovirus
The efficacy of the vaccine was found to be 97.6% based on the analysis of coronavirus incidence data in Russians inoculated with the two injections of the vaccine over a period from December 5, 2020 to March 31. 20201.
The vaccine has been registered in around 61 countries around the world, with a global population of over three billion.
The European Medicines Agency said on March 4 that it had started evaluation procedures for Sputnik V to examine its compliance with EU standards for efficacy, safety and quality. The agency predicts that the Russian vaccine registration could be completed by the end of May.
