German government didn’t block RT channels, YouTube did – cabinet spokesman – world

BERLIN, September 29. / TASS /. The shutdown of YouTube channel RT DE was a YouTube decision, and Berlin “took note,” German cabinet spokesman Steffen Seibert said on Wednesday.

“This measure is YouTube’s own decision,” he noted. “This step was not taken by the federal government.”

“We have taken note of this decision. I have nothing more to say,” said the spokesperson, adding that he had personally learned of the media shutdown.

Earlier, RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan said YouTube had removed two of RT’s German-speaking channels, RT DE and DFP. Russia’s IT watchdog has sent a letter to Google, demanding the removal of all restrictions and an explanation for their imposition. If Google refuses to comply, it faces a fine of up to 1 million rubles ($ 13,740) and up to three times that if it refuses again.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called the shutdown of German-speaking RT projects an “unprecedented act of informational aggression” by YouTube, carried out with “obvious connivance, if not insistence, on the German side.”

YouTube claimed the shutdown took place because RT channels broke website rules by posting Covid-related content that the platform considered misleading.
