Taiwan seeks to strengthen ties with new German government (MOFA)

Taipei, Dec. 8 (CNA) Taiwan is looking forward to more exchanges with the German tripartite coalition government, the Foreign Ministry (MOFA) said on Wednesday, congratulating Olaf Scholz of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) on ‘have become the new chancellor.

A congratulatory message from President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) has been sent, expressing hope that Taiwan-Germany relations will continue to build on their current foundations, MOFA said.

The two countries share a respect for freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law, which has influenced bilateral relations over the years, according to MOFA.

For example, he added, the two sides have signed 12 memoranda of understanding over the past five years, covering areas ranging from energy transition and financial oversight to air services.

Germany’s new government has shown support for Taiwan, MOFA said, citing its commitment to supporting Taiwan’s participation in international organizations in its coalition agreement signed on December 7.

In the deal, the traffic light coalition – which consists of the SPD, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Greens – also expressed support for changing the cross-strait status quo only through peaceful means and with a bilateral agreement.
